For free-standing wood stoves with a flat topHow it works
Light the fire. Let the stove do the rest.
A small part in the base turns some of the stove top's heat into a little electricity, just enough to spin the blades. There's nothing to switch on and nothing to charge.
-
Step 1
Light the fire
The fan sits still on the cold stove top.
-
Step 2
The top heats up
The blades start turning on their own.
-
Step 3
Hotter fire, faster fan
Warm air moves out into the room.
-
Step 4
The fire dies down
It slows and stops. Nothing to turn off.

By email, right after you order: our printable big-print Woodpile card (PDF), to print and tape up, and The Winter-Ready House guide, 46 pages (PDF).
You'll also need: a wood stove with a flat top that gets hot.
Will it work on my stove?
It's made for free-standing wood stoves with a flat top that gets hot. It usually won't do much on pellet stoves, propane heaters (like a Buddy heater), most fireplace inserts or a low fire, because their tops don't get hot enough. It's not for gas or electric heaters or open fireplaces. Not sure about yours? Write to help@firstfrosthome.com, tell us what stove you have (a photo helps), and we'll give you a straight answer before you buy.

- It needs a hot stove top to turn. On a cold stove it stays still. As the stove top warms up it starts on its own, and it slows down and stops as the stove cools.
- It doesn't make heat. Your stove does the heating.
- The blades and the base get very hot. Keep children and pets away from it, and let it cool, or use a glove, before you move it.
- Keep an eye on the thermometer. A stove top that runs too hot can damage the fan. The highest temperature for the fan is printed in the instructions in the box. The thermometer is a rough guide, not an exact reading.
- If a blade arrives bent, send us a photo. We'll send a new fan or refund you, and you don't send it back.
- Follow the instructions in the box for where to set it on your stove.

Straight talk
A gentle breeze, not a box fan.
Without a fan, a lot of the warm air off a wood stove rises and sits near the ceiling. The fan pushes some of it out across the room, so the warmth doesn't just collect around the stove. It doesn't make heat: your stove does that.
